Free Time? Middle of Winter?

Sometimes you just need to blow off a little steam. Take a break from studying, leave behind the library and be outside. I know it’s kind of freezing this winter to be outside for prolonged periods of time, but for those milder days, there are lots of things to do on and off campus. I’m going to share one of my favourite off campus activities with you. It involves having to take the TTC or a bit of a walk from campus but it if you’re game, it’s well worth the trip.
Go down to Harbourfront (especially in the morning) and check out the Natrel Rink at least once during the winter months. The rink is great, the views are outstanding and this year it has been so cold lately, even the lake itself is basically frozen!
Usually it is pretty empty before noon, which is a stark constrast to the busy atmosphere that pervades Nathan Phillips Square. Skate rentals are also cheaper here – $8 for an unlimited amount of time. If you have your own skates, you can skate for free. Music is always playing over the speakers, but I prefer to go with my headphones and do laps with my own soundtrack.
During the evenings, beautiful lights along the trees and colourful ones around the rink reflect off the ice. On Saturday night’s throughout the season, they even hold DJ Skate Nights! A small restauarant with seating is also open during the evening hours, and it is a great place to grab a hot chocolate and take a break.
