As a student I’m always looking for ways to save money. One of the great things about university is that there always seems to be free food somewhere.
I remember once walking to class and there were just people outside of Sid Smith giving out free pints of Ben & Jerry’s; it was so good! You can also get involved with your college. So many different clubs and events just have refreshments and some even have full meals for free. One year Rainbow Trin had an event where they were serving Indian Food. I couldn’t make it, but afterwards there was so much food leftover they just posted on our Facebook group so that anyone that was hungry could drop by and get some food; the pakoras were to die for! Then you have things like Woodsworth College’s free pancakes every Wednesday.
Going back to clubs and events, these aren’t boring events that require food to draw a crowd. No, they’re movie nights, game nights, and even tea clubs! I don’t know about you, but I am not at all opposed to the idea of having fun while getting free food. There’s also free food to be had outside of the colleges. There’s student unions and university wide clubs and their various pubs throughout the year. You just go and food and drink (including non-alcoholic) is ordered until the money runs out. I’ve been to pub nights for The English Society and the IR society and it’s always a lot of fun. You may have friends in the program, so tag along or go and meet some new people!
Alternatively, if you’re too lazy to be on the constant look out for food, there’s always http://nourishmeforfree.com/uoftvisit the website and they will point you in the direction of any free food being offered on campus.
