For International Students
U of T is proud to be the home away from home to almost 8,000 international students from over 150 countries. We have a number of resources and programs to help you adjust to the new customs and culture in Canada, and encourage you to check out the services at the
International Student Centre, read up on health insurance and education yourself about immigration issues.
International Student Centre
The
International Student Centre (ISC) is the main source of support for international students and a gathering place for students with cross-cultural interests on campus. The Centre offers many
services throughout the year:
- Reception and orientation — new international students are welcome to register with the ISC in August and September to receive important information about settling into their new environment. The orientation program also includes trips and tours around campus and Toronto.
- International Student Advising Office — this is where you can find support for a wide range of issues, such as immigration, employment and adjusting to life in Canada.
- English Conversation Program — if English isn’t your first language, this is your opportunity to improve your English language skills.
- Cross-cultural counselling — our cross-cultural counsellor provides culturally sensitive counseling to U of T students on personal issues. Feel free to discuss anything from family problems to depression to self-esteem.
- Social and cultural events — the ISC offers students a taste of Canadian and world cultures by hosting cultural and social activities, such as themed dinners, parties, field trips and tours.
Health Insurance
All international students and their dependents get health insurance coverage through the
University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). New and returning international students are automatically enrolled in UHIP for 12 months, running from September 1 to August 31, and their annual fee is automatically paid with tuition. You have to visit the UHIP office to pick up your card.
Immigration Basics
Here are a few basics for you. A reminder that the International Student Centre is your main source for
immigration information.
- Study permits -- If you are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you have to get a study permit and, in some cases, a temporary resident visa before entering Canada to attend school. If your program requires you be in Canada beyond the expiry date on your study permit, you need to submit an extension form at least two months before your permit expires.
- Work permits -- You can work on campus as long as you have a valid study permit and are registered at U of T full-time. First you need to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) by bringing your valid passport, study permit and letter of employment from the university to any Service Canada or HRSD Canada office. You are eligible to work off-campus if you meet the criteria outlined by the Off-Campus Work Program. Eligible students need to apply for this permit through Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
- Income tax -- If you earn money while working in Canada, you have to file an income tax return. To get help filing your tax return, visit the International Student Centre.
